在Anna Steuer-Jurek、Ph.D.

To broaden students' international perspectives and integrate theory with practice, the 2022 cohort of Landscape Architecture students and faculty from Cracow recently organized an enriching study tour. Led by professors Anna Steuer-Jurek, Ph.D. Wojciech Bobek, and Katarzyna Łakomy, the group traveled fromCracow to Warsaw, visiting a range of classical and contemporary landscape projects. Through on-site visits and interactive lectures, they engaged in a profound dialogue on "Landscape and the City."

The first stop was the gardens of the Wilanów Palace Museum (Park i ogrody przy Muzeum Pałacu Króla Jana III w Wilanowie), a Baroque-style garden dating back to the 17th century. Guided by professional docents, students explored its evolution—from Italian-style upper and lower gardens to 18th-century embroidered parterres and the introduction of Anglo-Chinese landscape elements. This site served as a vivid case study for understanding the interplay between European garden styles and cultural contexts.

In the afternoon, the group visited the Royal Castle Slope Garden in Warsaw, analyzing plant arrangements, terrain variations, and historical restoration efforts. Professors highlighted fruit tree planting designs and spatial organization, prompting students to reflect on blending traditional gardens with modern landscape principles.

Next, they explored the Warsaw University Library Rooftop Garden (Ogrody BUW), a multi-tiered green space divided into gold, silver, crimson, and green zones. Faculty detailed strategies for plant selection and functional zoning, deepening students’ understanding of human-nature interactions.

The day concluded at the urban garden adjacent to the Copernicus Science Center (Ogrody Centrum Nauki Kopernik). Vibrant flowerbeds and potted plants contrasted with the distant city skyline, illustrating harmonious coexistence between nature and urbanity. This park underscored how landscapes enhance both aesthetics and the accessibility of public spaces.

On the second day, the group visited Forest Campus Warszawa, a project integrating office spaces with lush greenery. A designer shared insights into its conceptualization, spatial layout, and plant selection, emphasizing the "urban garden" philosophy of creating green, livable workspaces in dense cities. The final stop was the award-winningPark Akcji „Burza”, recipient of the European Prize for Urban Public Space. Centered around a historical uprising mound, the park intertwines commemoration, ecological restoration, and community engagement. Through faculty guidance, students grasped how landscape design shapes spaces while narrating cultural and historical stories.

Throughout the tour, professors encouraged students to observe, analyze, question, and articulate ideas, bridging classroom theories with real-world contexts. Participants noted that on-site experiences transformed abstract concepts into tangible inspiration, fueling deeper professional reflection.

This study tour not only expanded students’ global outlook but also sharpened their observational and critical thinking skills in real project environments. It laid a robust foundation for upcoming graduation projects, marking a profound and practical milestone in their academic journey.
