The South-to-North Water Diversion Project is a key national project aimed at improving people’s livelihoods, as well as a vital practical platform for cross-regional water resource allocation, the safeguarding of ecological security, and the integrated management of engineering landscapes. Taking the Central Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project as its subject, this thesis demonstrates the landscape architecture discipline’s response to the demands of major national projects and social practice, whilst also showcasing the School’s ongoing exploration in talent development guided by engineering, problem-solving and interdisciplinary innovation.
The research addresses issues of ecological perception and intelligent monitoring within large-scale linear infrastructure, examining how AI models are validated, calibrated and interpreted. This topic bridges landscape architecture, ecological informatics, artificial intelligence and engineering landscape management, reflecting the School’s distinctive approach to encouraging students to undertake research training through real-world, complex problems.

Among the authors of the paper, postgraduate student Zhang Rui was an undergraduate student in the Landscape Architecture programme at the ISE in the 2020 intake, and continued her postgraduate studies at the School after graduation. From the foundational training received during her undergraduate studies to undertaking high-level research and writing for her postgraduate thesis, Zhang Rui’s development trajectory demonstrates the positive outcomes of the School’s integrated undergraduate-to-postgraduate training programme in Landscape Architecture.
Liu Yuehan and Pan Xin, both 2020 graduates of ISE’s Landscape Architecture programme, also participated in this research. Having now commenced postgraduate studies at other universities, the professional foundations, research mindset and collaborative skills they developed during their undergraduate studies continue to play a vital role in their inter-institutional and cross-team research, thereby demonstrating the School’s undergraduate training programme’s long-term impact and enduring influence.
This achievement marks a significant breakthrough as the first instance in which postgraduate students from ISE have served as first authors on a paper published in a top-tier journal in Zone 1. It provides a landmark case study for the School’s professional master’s programme in Landscape Architecture and its commitment to high-level research-based education.

During the thesis writing and submission phase, Zhang Rui was participating in a study exchange programme in Poland. This international learning experience broadened the student’s academic horizons and enabled him to understand the relationship between landscape architecture research and international academic standards within a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary environment. From topic selection and development, through to English writing and responding to three rounds of revisions, the thesis-writing process itself constituted a comprehensive training in international academic practice.
As one of the achievements stemming from the ISE’s long-term initiatives to advance internationalized schooling, interdisciplinary talent cultivation and engineering practice education, this paper integrates national major engineering scenarios, artificial intelligence methodologies, eco-informatics issues and professional landscape architecture expertise.
